News for the Week of October 30

Dear Upper School Families.

I hope that you are getting over your post Homecoming blues. It was a truly successful event and again thanks to all that were involved. I hope that Unplugged helped a bit with the transition along with the varsity girls volleyball victory over La Jolla Country Day. Next week we start off with a "boo" at the Halloween Kickback; it should be some good fun.

News for the Week of October 23

Dear Upper School Community,

We are deep into Homecoming week so there certainly is great Parker spirit sweeping across campus. The theme of New Orleans echoes throughout the Quad and beyond. I have rarely seen such spirited and colorful wear. Certainly, Monday we will return back to our more traditional dress code.

This week and in the days to come I meet with each teacher and department head to go over goals for the year. It is a great opportunity for me to hear about trends and to discuss thoughtful pedagogy. Clearly, we have a first-rate group of committed teachers who are excited about working with your children.

If I don't see you at some of the Homecoming festivities, I wish you a great week.

Best,

Paul I. Barsky

And looking ahead......

Wednesday October 26th:

7:45 am: (Nicholas Commons) What Do Your Children Know About YOU??????  What to tell....when to tell....what NOT to tell. Once again it's time for a parent coffee with Dr. McLaughlin to swap stories about family history, experiences and lessons on life.  Sometimes we forget to share those learning moments with our children, and, often times they don't ask.  Family traditions and stories need to be passed on to our children before they're lost

7:00 pm: Unplugged music event

Thursday October 27th:

One week interim trips are being offered Feb. 11-18, 2012 to Guatemala, Hawai'i, New York, and Tahiti. Space is limited and the deadline to sign-up is fast approaching. Students and parents who are interested in learning more about these opportunities or that are ready to commit, need to attend a mandatory informational meeting today from 6-7 p.m. in Crivello Hall. Additional info is available on the school's website or contact trip leaders directly.

News for the Week of October 16...

Dear Upper School Community,

I hope that you are easing into fall comfortably. With mid-trimester grades in and about to be posted and with Homecoming just around the corner, certainly the campus is buzzing. As a reminder, mid-trimester marks are a "snap shot" in time of your child's progress. They are meant as a check-in and can prompt fruitful discussion as your child grasps new concepts and  skills.

I wanted to call your attention to some exciting new work on which members of the foreign language department are working. Alex Gomez, Spanish teacher, explains, "Video Podcasts are becoming increasingly popular in education. Many colleges and universities are starting to provide their students with video podcasts of recorded class lectures. With the advances in educational technology, our vodcasting assignments will make it possible for us to use class time effectively by allowing students to automatically download new materials. It will allow them to repeatedly view the clips as needed outside of class. If you’ve seen a TV weather report in the last twenty years or more you’ve seen a Chorma Key video effect in action. I decided to use that same concept for my classes. We plan to create audio and video podcasts (vodcasting) that are tightly integrated into the curriculum and will foster and enhance the concepts and skills addressed in our Spanish class."

Also, on October 24 Parker is pleased to participate in "Food Day." This is a "nationwide campaign for delicious, healthy, and affordable food produced in a sustainable humane way." This day is designed to "inspire Americans to improve their diets and fix our food system" by "promoting safe and healthy foods."
