News for the Week of January 29

I trust that it was a splendid week for you.

I hope that you got the chance to see Sweeney Todd. It was a powerful and wonderful production under the guidance of Gordon Cantiello. Well done!

This week I had the chance to attend briefly a wonderful class by the 10th grade Chemistry teacher, Hima Joshi. "It was time for you her yearly "America's Next Top Model: Chemistry Edition" Music, costumes, and molecular models! That was the scene this week in Dr. Joshi's chemistry class. Dramatic runway walks with molecular models turned into scholarly discussions about the benefits, side effects, and societal impacts of various drugs. Panels of judges were on site to award prizes to the following winners":

1st period: Sarah Benjamin and Sammy Rodriguez - Caffeine

2nd period: McKenna Allard, Mackenzie Rowe, and Sophie Woods - Penicillin

6th period: Michela Rodriguez and Audrey Yang - Vitamin C

7th period: Kim Svatos and Jay Gardenswartz - PCP; Arielle Swedback and Elisa Greenberg - LSD

News for the Week of January 22

Dear Upper School Parents,

I hope that is has been a great week for you.

A variety of clubs have been quite active recently. A couple of our intrepid club leaders are proud of recent meetings. Emily Bohl  notes, “French Honor Society members experienced La Fête des Rois, a French celebration that takes place annually on Epiphany.  While FHS seniors Adam Lohnes and Zack Emge explained the way French teenagers abbreviate in text messages, everyone enjoyed the three kings' cake.  Lucky FHS members Carolyn Hansen, Anna Rudakov, Lexi Smallwood, and Jasmine Anklesaria each found a "féve" in their slice of the cake, designating them as queens for the day! Each will enjoy a day off from homework in the coming week and a celebration in their honor.  Quelle bonne chance!”

Solia Yaley reports on the most recent Mediterranean Club meeting: “It was yet another informative and festive meeting, highlighted by a presentation on Israel by Raphie Cantor. Raphie prepared a PowerPoint presentation that explored the country's history, culture, conflicts, and most importantly, it's famous cuisine. Raphie also prepared a selection of traditional Israeli food. All twenty of the members who attended enjoyed fresh pita bread, hummus, falafel, and salad. Everyone stayed until the end of lunch to talk and go back for seconds. It was in all, another very successful meeting!"

News for the Week of January 15

Dear Upper School Families,

As part of our goal to bring global conscientious to our community, we have a group of students who have been invited to attend a special presentation with Vietnam napalm survivor Kim arrange in Santa Barbara. She is the young girl in the classic Life photograph which shows terrified children running from their village during the Vietnam War. It should be a powerful presentation, and we are pleased that Eric Taylor and Tom Crowley from the Social Studies department are able to arrange this special opportunity for our students.

I am also pleased to announce that our very own W.A.R. (We Are Robot) Lords have started designing the robot for this year's FIRST Robotics Competition. It is an especially tricky game this year (please see the below link), but I have every confidence that they will do a stellar job.

As I write this, we are getting ready for the first annual Linda Vista v. Mission Valley campus soccer match this evening. It should be a hoot. Personally, I have not played soccer in thirty-five years when I was on the Blue Team, and we lost to the mighty Yellow Team. This evening will be pay back time. Have a great week!
