New for the week of August 29...
Dear Upper School Community,
I hope that the summer was a delightful one filled with rest, good books, productive and non-productive activities, and genuine renewal.
New teachers officially begin on Friday, and all other teachers arrive back to campus officially on Monday, but some are already busy getting ready for the start of school. As I wrote last week, we have had a couple of orientation sessions, so I feel that we have already begun what I am sure will be a wonderful year.
As I was reflecting on what the approach of a new school year means, I came across an anonymous source who wrote, "A beginning is only the start of a journey to another beginning." The idea that learning leads one on a undefined path to new opportunities is one that reasonates. We want our students to explore, examine, be challenged, and process. We delight in seeing where this takes them. Let this year be full of meaningful beginnings.
Here is what you need to know:
1. Summer Reading
Students should be finishing up on their summer reading which is listed on our MSBDirect website. Grade 9: There was summer reading for both English (Rhetoric) and Social Studies (Topics in Social Studies).
2. Grade 9 Parent and Student Orientation
Orientation is scheduled for ALL incoming freshmen and their parents on September 1
Students meet at Upper School Nicholas Commons for their orientation and dinner at 5:45. Parents meet for check-in and a reception at the PAC Terrace starting at 5:45. After food and fun, the parents’ and student orientation meeting will be held in Crivello Hall from 7:00 to 7:45 pm. 3. Senior Events Coming Up
Senior Yearbook Portraits
All senior portraits must be completed by September 2nd to be included in the yearbook. You may contact Studio/Michael Spengler Photography at (858) 454-0331 or www.studiomlajolla.com for an appointment if you haven’t done so already. A detailed letter regarding senior portraits was mailed to senior families earlier this summer.
DATE CLARIFICATION---Senior College Night is scheduled for WEDNESDAY, September 14, not Tuesday.
Senior Class “BBQ” Thursday, September 1, 11:00 am to 1 pm
La Jolla Shores Beach--Details to follow from your ASB representatives.
4. Locker Distribution Information
Monday August 29: 8:00 am-5:00 pm: Seniors may claim a locker
Tuesday August 30: 8:00 am onwards: Grades 9-11 may claim a locker
Some points to note:
•No lock may be put on the locker prior to the assigned date or it will be removed.
•Students must "sign-in" their locker on the sheet at Ms. Southworth's desk.
•Students must use a combination lock; key locks are not permissible and will be removed.
•Each student may have only one locker.
5. Opening Day is September 6
Students will start the morning by reporting to their advisors and then off to classes they will go.
