Parents @ Parker

Kristie Says, June 12, 2016

Congratulations to all of the 5th and 8th grade students promoting to the Middle and Upper Schools next year!  A special thank you to parents Kate Smith, Linda Golden, Charity Byrnes and Jenn Brady for their time and talent in transforming the lower school playground into a fun and festive promotion dinner for all of the 5th grade families. After the Lower School gates closed behind the last 5th grade parent on Friday night, I knew it was time to wish all of our Parker families a very happy summer. That’s right, summer is officially here!

The PA Welcome Committee is now working across divisions to create events large and small to introduce new families to our Parker family. We encourage everyone at Parker to consider themselves part of the Welcome Committee. Whether you meet a new family at an SK playdate or summer school drop-off, please take a moment to offer a warm Parker welcome! For more specific questions on Welcome Committee events for new parents please contact our Division VPs:

VPs of the Lower School: Julie Turner & Kim Kelley pa-vpls@francisparker.org

VPs of the Middle School: Megan Costa & Anne McManus pa-vpms@francisparker.org

VPs of the Upper School: Christie Thoene & Marilyn Tobin pa-vpus@francisparker.org

Also, Middle and Upper School parents should look for an eblast coming soon. We are asking for volunteers to be grade level representatives and fill open committee chair positions. We will also be reaching out with information about Homecoming 2016, an all-school event that will take place less than 3 weeks after the start of the school year on September 24. So stay tuned!

Finally, keep in touch with us over the summer. Please LIKE US on Facebook! We will continue to work to include summer PA events and highlights on our Facebook page. Stay current with our Homecoming preparations, volunteer needs, and everything else PA.

Happy Summer!

Kate Says, June 5, 2016

Thank you for clicking on my 36th and final blog of the school year. It has been an honor to serve as your 2015-16 Parents Association president and carry on the work of some many dedicated volunteers from years past.

It is no secret that the Parker community is so special due to parent involvement and support. I thank each and every Parker parent for all they have done to help our school this past year. We are also so very fortunate to have faculty and staff who welcome parent involvement which in turn makes our school feel like a family. For that, I am most appreciative.

Please join us at our last PA General Meeting and End-of-Year Appreciation Breakfast on Monday at 8:30 a.m. in the Nicholas Commons on the Linda Vista campus. Along with allowing us to offer our thanks, this gathering will also serve as the installation of the 2016-17 PA Board of Directors, which will be led by our new president, Kristie Diamond.

And, now, let’s hear what Kristie says…

First, a HUGE thank you to Kate for continuing the legacy of the PA leadership with the hard work, dedication and love of Parker that each PA President before her has brought to the position. I am humbled to take on the President role following Kate and I am committed to do my best for Parker and the PA community. Here it goes...

Happy summer to all of our Parker families! As you shove aside school backpacks filled with old granola bars, crumpled Monday envelopes and never opened French workbooks to make room for camp schedules, boogie boards and flip flops remember the PA has a lot going on this summer!

Our Division VPs (listed below among 2016-17 PA board members) have already begun planning events to welcome new families into our Parker community. The PA Welcome Committee will be working across divisions to create events large and small to introduce new families to our Parker family. We encourage everyone at Parker to consider themselves part of the Welcome Committee. Whether you meet a new family at an SK playdate or Summer School drop-off please take a moment to offer a warm Parker welcome!

Also, look for our new PA Notebook coming in the mail this month. We are excited to offer our Parker parents another way to understand and access our PA community. The PA Notebook contains key names, emails and information to keep you connected to parent fellowship and volunteer opportunities. And, of course, continue to watch this space during the school year for your most up-to-date PA information!

Finally, mark your calendars for the first PA General Meeting of the 2016-17 school year on September 12, 2016 in the Szekely Auditorium on the Mission Hills campus. We can’t wait to see all of you there! Join us for a morning coffee social beginning at 8 a.m., PA announcements including information on Homecoming (Homecoming is September 24, 2016) and our featured speaker Kevin Yaley, Head of School.

With our 2015-16 academic year coming to a close, we invite you to join us for the Parents Association general meeting and end-of-year appreciation breakfast on Monday, June 6 at 8:30 a.m. in the Upper School Nicholas Commons. This meeting will also serve as the installation of the 2016-17 PA Board of Directors.

The collaboration of many Parker parent volunteers is what fuels the community-building and fundraising efforts of the PA from one year to the next. I’d like to thank the amazing group of parents who have served as the 2015-16 PA Board for Directors: Donna Sheridan, Treasurer; Camille Dunbar, Secretary; Briana Ruff, VP Fund Development; Charity Byrnes, VP Communications; Fatin Mayberry, VP Parent Education; Kristin Zeko and Christie Thoene, VP Upper School; Anne Rauch and Megan Costa, VP Middle School; Noelle Ludwig and Julie Turner, VP Lower School; and Kristie Diamond, President-elect. Thank you for your commitment, compassion, support  and, of course, your friendship. Your dedication to building upon the successes of your predecessors and your efforts toward creating a legacy for your successors are deeply appreciated.

I'd like to give a special call out to Charity Byrnes for working with me over the past 35+ weekends to edit and publish the weekly Parents@Parker news.

Kate Says, May 22, 2016

It is hard to believe that we have just a little over two weeks left in the 2015-16 academic year. The remaining weeks of school are filled with performances, presentations, promotions, and, of course, commencement. There is also one final offering from the Parents Association this year, the End-of-Year Appreciation Breakfast on Monday, June 6 at 8:30 a.m. in the Upper School Nicholas Commons.

We invite all Parker parents to attend the breakfast, thankful for everything you do to support Parker. This meeting will also serve as the installation of the 2016-17 PA Board of Directors.

The numbers from the Black & White Ball are in….drum roll please… The gross sales were $967,432, resulting in a net revenue of more than $725,000, all of which will go to support financial assistance and faculty professional development! This record-breaking fundraising result for the gala was achieved because of the fervent leadership of our Black & White Ball chairs, Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade and Michele Arthur, their fearless committee of more than 60 Parker parents, and everyone who supported this amazing event to help make it so successful.

A heartfelt thank you to Kathy and Sandy Purdon for hosting the Class of 2016 parent mixer yesterday. This lovely event allowed the parents of seniors to gather and reminisce on their time at Parker while their kids were off at prom.

Speaking of Kathy Purdon, I’d also like to commend her for her service as the chair of Francis Parker Board of Trustees. She has been a treasure to Parker in both her volunteerism efforts on the PA and as a Trustee.  Kathy and all the members of the Board of Trustees work tirelessly for our school to ensure its health and secure its legacy. On behalf of the PA, I thank all of the trustees for their dedication to our school, our students and our future.

The Class of 2016 parents, which happens to include our Board of Trustees chair and this year’s and past years’ gala chairs, and countless other hardworking parent volunteers, have made a remarkable impact on our school. We thank each of you for all you have done for Parker and congratulate both you and your children on your vast amount of accomplishments.
