Week of February 8, 2015

MARY SAYS:

I’d like to thank the parents who joined us for our General Meeting on Monday evening! It is my hope that those of you who attended, found our discussion on parenting within the context of the college admissions process informative and helpful.  My only wish is that more parents could have been there to join in on the discussion. If you missed it, never fear, here are a few tips for parenting your way through the college application process that we shared:

What Is My Role?

Support and Encourage: Be your child’s biggest fan but give them the space to show everyone what they've learned. Show your support by allowing them to shoulder more responsibility while providing positive reinforcement as they begin to make adult decisions. Your confidence in them will further prepare them for college.

Research: One of the ways you can be most helpful in this stressful process is to do research about individual colleges.  Sometimes students don’t have enough time to adequately research schools, so you can really help a lot.  We recommend websites that end in .org, .edu, or .gov.  It is also helpful to visit individual school websites for specific (and up-to-date) information about that campus.

Foster Independence: You would be surprised by how many students don’t know how to do laundry when they get to college!  This is a great time to teach your students to be independent.  Do they know how to read a map?  Can they manage their own money or time?  Can they wake up without you pounding on the door to get them up?  Think about the skills they will need in college and make sure they are ready by the end senior year.

Pay: Senior year is soooooo expensive!  Plan ahead by knowing application fees, the cost of sending test scores, or even budgeting money for college visits.

Prepare for Financial Aid Applications: Students are responsible for their college applications, but you are largely responsible for the financial aid information—mostly because you hold the family’s financial information and they do not.  Bonus Tip: file your taxes electronically (and early) to avoid last minute audits.

Coordinate College Visits: One of the most exciting roles you have is as a travel agent.  Plan trips to visit local colleges in the Fall.  Then, in the Spring, plan the more long distance trips AFTER your student has been admitted.  Bonus Tip: we suggest visiting colleges on school days so that you get a true idea of what the college will be like.

What Can I do?

Family Calendar: This is not an electronic document!  Instead, this is intended to be up on the fridge so that everyone can see how soon the deadlines are approaching.  That way, instead of having to constantly remind them about the deadlines verbally…you can just walk by and tap the deadline that is coming up.

Weekend Family Meetings: Most families wait until about 10 pm on a school night to suddenly bring up college applications.  This usually leads to arguments and everyone has to go to bed upset.  Instead, a weekend family meeting at a public place (like going out to lunch) can be a great place to talk about college applications.

Balance and Compromise: Many families argue about which colleges their students are going apply to.  You may have your favorites, and so does your student.  So…make them apply to your top choice and let them apply to their top choice.  Then, after they actually get admitted, talk about the pros and cons of each school. There is no use arguing about a college if they haven’t even been admitted yet.

Embrace The Back Seat! This is that magical time where your students are becoming the architects of their own destinies. Your role now is to be okay with getting comfortable in the back seat. I know it’s scary, but our students are in the driver’s seat.

Week of February 1, 2015

MARY SAYS:

February is just beginning and I feel like it’s going to breeze by before we know it!

Kindness Week was a great success and I hope we can all find ways to keep the good thoughts and feelings going. Next week both the Lower and Middle Schools will be celebrating Language and Culture Week and the Upper School will begin their interim week activities. As a Parker parent, I appreciate the fact that Parker provides our students with a variety of opportunities to experience possibilities both in and out of the classroom. I hope our kids get the most out of their experiences over the next week.

I’d be lying though if I didn’t say that I’m looking forward to February break. Whether you’re home, on the slopes or parts unknown, I hope that you all have a chance to recharge your batteries.

Please don’t forget to join us at our General Meeting on Monday February 2 at 5:30pm in Crivello Hall. We will be discussing parenting within the context of the college application process. It promises to be an informative evening and I look forward to seeing you there!

Week of January 25, 2015

MARY SAYS:

I know I’ve said this before, but 2015 is off to a great start! I had the pleasure of attending the Lower School Open House and found myself completely caught up in the magic that is the Lower School. From the beautiful giving tree to those amazing squires leading prospective families on tours, it was a wonderful showcase of all those things that make Parker special.

I’m also doing a happy dance because you all have no idea how hard the 2015 Gala Committee is working to make this year’s gala the best ever!  Future Gala meeting dates and times will be published in the Parent Association newsletter, so if you’re still thinking about getting involved, it’s not too late.  I say we all put April 25 on our calendars now because it’s a night no one will want to miss!

Lastly, I’d like to personally invite you all to our only evening General Meeting of the year!  On Monday, February 2 in Crivello Hall, our Parent Education committee will have a panel to help parents navigate and survive our students’ journey through the college application process. I look forward to seeing you there!

Week of January 18, 2015

MARY SAYS:

I’d like to thank Sophonya Simpson-Adams and the Parent Ed committee for an excellent presentation and discussion at our General Meeting this past Monday! Robert Greene, Senior Consultant and Leadership Coach from Jones and Associates gave our parents an informative and inspiring presentation on the benefits of enriching our Parker community through diversity and inclusion. Parker has been working with Jones and Associates to achieve its diversity and inclusion goals set forth in the Strategic Plan. We were fortunate to be given a taste of the great work already being done at Parker as a result of this collaboration.

Robert was an engaging and motivating speaker. He helped us all to understand that diversity and inclusion are not about fairness, but about excellence. He also taught us that the skill set needed for us all to be successful in this endeavor is something that can be learned. Our children are already ahead of us in this regard because the increasingly complex and diverse world they live in requires the ability to empathize, embrace diversity, and have minds and hearts that are open to change. Robert’s message was that the latest research supports the fact that in any situation, diversity of thought, background and experience yields excellence.

What I took away from this presentation was that as a parent, I have an important role to play in guiding my son’s journey towards being a true citizen of the world he will inherit.  I particularly enjoyed the discussion around the ideas of mirrors and windows. It became clear to me that we as parents are responsible for providing the context by which our children look at themselves (mirrors), as well as the world around them (windows). If their mirrors and windows are clear and uncluttered by (or at least aware of) bias, they will enjoy greater success in all areas of their lives.

At the end of this lively discussion, our facilitator gave us all actual tools to aid us in guiding both ourselves and our children towards success in this endeavor. It is my hope that the parents who attended were inspired and invigorated. If you missed it, never fear, we’ll be getting the highlights up on the Parent Association website soon.
