Parents @ Parker

Week of September 21, 2014

MARY SAYS:

I can’t believe that we are one month away from Homecoming! If you don’t already have Saturday, October 18 on your calendar, now is the time to get it on there! I don’t know of any other Parker event that brings parents, grandparents, alumni, students, staff and faculty together the way that Parker Homecoming does. To me, it feels like a huge family reunion where everyone is united in their goal to have fun and root for our phenomenal football team.  And for those of you who are looking for ways to volunteer and get involved, it gets even better! In our Parents @ Parker newsletter (below) and on our Parents @ Homecoming website, you will find everything you need to know in order to volunteer and help out in ways that work for you. It sounds like a win-win to me. I can’t wait! Go Lancers!

Also, please note that our next Parent Association General Meeting will be on Monday, October 6 at 8:45am in the Szekely Auditorium.

homecoming VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Homecoming Volunteers Needed! Homecoming Day is on Saturday, October 18th and WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Although the apex of the day is the varsity football game which kicks off promptly at 1pm, the day is filled with activities for the children.  The Fun Zone includes a rock wall, a velcro wall, slides, jumpies, face painting, balloon artists and more. The Fun Zone and student food and merchandise booths will be open at 11am.  Food will range from hot dogs and hamburgers to nachos and other snacks.  The street tacos sold by Victor’s crew are a must!  In order to make this a fun-filled day for everyone, we need your help. From setting up activities for the kids, to participating in float building, to helping set-up the Homecoming Dance and of course, the tear down and clean up.

We are in need of volunteers for the following activities:

  • Homecoming Day Committee

  • Homecoming Day set-up & clean-up

  • Homecoming Dance set-up & clean-up

  • Float Building  Dinner & Snacks

  • Convertibles for the Homecoming Parade

Visit our PARENTS @ HOMECOMING website to sign-up to help.

Week of September 14, 2014

MARY SAYS:

This was a great week!

I would first like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended our first Parent Association General Meeting of the year on Monday! I was happy that we had so many new parents in attendance. It is my hope that you felt both welcomed and informed.  I’d also like to give a special shout out to those of you who introduced yourselves to me and asked how you could get involved. I love that! Please believe me when I say that we need you!

Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better, I attended the New Parent Dinner on Tuesday evening and had a lovely time.  The setting in the Gooding Courtyard was beautiful. Everything from the cleverly decorated tables and amazing Thai food to the great company and conversation made for a wonderful evening.  Again, I was impressed by those of you who asked how to get involved and had questions about various aspects of Parker life. I enjoyed meeting you all! As I sat at my table, I couldn’t help but think back to the New Parent Dinner I attended in 2008. At that dinner, I remember feeling welcomed as well as a sense of certainty that Parker was the right choice for our family.  It is my hope that the students, parents, staff and faculty in attendance on Tuesday evening helped you to feel that way as well.

Have a great week three!

Week of September 7, 2014

MARY SAYS:

The first week of school has come and gone! I truly hope that whether it was your junior kindergartener starting their first day of school ever, your 6th grader leaving for camp, or your senior beginning their last year of high school, that it was a good beginning for a great year!

Change is all around us. We have new Parker staff and faculty, new students, new parents and new schedules. While it can definitely take a while to get our bearings in the beginning, I’d like to encourage us all to embrace the adventure. This is a great time to take advantage of all the ways we will have to get to know each other and be in the know about what’s happening at Parker. There will be a lot of information coming your way over the coming weeks and throughout the year. I encourage each of you to take a minute and figure out how you will utilize all the tools at your disposal to take it all in and effectively use what you need.

I look forward to meeting many of you at our first General meeting on Monday as well as at the New Parent Dinner on Tuesday!

Week of August 31, 2014

mary SAYS:

September is almost here! I would like to start by extending a warm welcome to all the families who will be new to Parker this year! We are so glad that you are here and I look forward meeting you! There are so many ways to get connected and get involved at Parker and I encourage you to take advantage of all that this great school has to offer. Our website, newsletters and General meetings will help you to stay on top of all events and activities as well as provide you with a variety of opportunities to volunteer. We need you, and please remember that no amount of time or effort is too small!

Speaking of time and effort, I would like to thank the PA Board, Committee Chairs and all Parker volunteers for the work you have already done over the summer to get us ready for 2014-2015. We’re just getting started and I can already see that this year will be a memorable one! Thank you!

As we start this year, I cannot stress enough that communication will be the name of the game. It is the collaboration and connections between parents, teachers, students, and staff that make Parker the great school that it is. So let’s communicate! Read the Parent Association and School newsletters, take some time to explore the website, send an email to a committee chair and ask about volunteer opportunities, take a chance and introduce yourself to someone you don’t know. If we all do our part to keep the lines of communication open, the possibilities for us all to do better and be better will truly be endless.

So....Let’s do this! Let’s work together to make the 2014-2015 school year at Parker the best one yet!

Please mark your calendars for our first PA General Meeting of the 2014-15 School Year!

When: Monday, September 8, 2014 immediately after flagraising (8:45am)
Where: On the Lower School campus in the Szekely Auditorium

Please join us! All parents are encouraged to attend.

Week of June 15, 2014

MARY SAYS:

Thank You!

It has truly been a great year for the Parker Parents Association! It has been my honor this past year to get a closer look at the work that goes into educating our parent community, supporting the Parker mission and helping to raise funds to benefit our students and faculty. I know it's been done, but as the newly installed President of this great Association, I cannot let the year end without extending a heartfelt thank you to our immediate past president, Susan Davey as well as every board member, committee chair and volunteer who has stepped up to serve. Whether it was helping with faculty appreciation, bringing hamburgers for a homecoming booth, chairing pet day, or attending the Gala, your efforts and participation were both needed and appreciated!

As I look ahead to the 2014-2015 year, I am filled with excitement (and a little terror!) because I now have a chance to provide the kind of leadership that will keep us moving forward. Fortunately for me, I won't be alone in this endeavor. I am surrounded by an exceptional 2014-2015 Board of Directors who will join me in helping us all to collaborate and communicate even more effectively as we look forward to another year's journey at Parker.

Here's to a great year!

Ten college admission officers will be leading the camp along with the Parker College Counseling team.  During the camp, students will be working on their college essays, interviews and applications.  Please note that the workshop was announced at the College Night for Juniors in November, was listed on the Junior Calendar, an email was sent home to students and parents as a reminder twice this spring, and the students were reminded of the workshop every month since November during their class meetings.  There is no make-up of the workshop because the college representatives will only be on campus for these three days.  If a student needs to miss the workshop, they should contact their college counselor this week.

happy summer!
