Parents @ Parker

Week of June 15, 2014

MARY SAYS:

Thank You!

It has truly been a great year for the Parker Parents Association! It has been my honor this past year to get a closer look at the work that goes into educating our parent community, supporting the Parker mission and helping to raise funds to benefit our students and faculty. I know it's been done, but as the newly installed President of this great Association, I cannot let the year end without extending a heartfelt thank you to our immediate past president, Susan Davey as well as every board member, committee chair and volunteer who has stepped up to serve. Whether it was helping with faculty appreciation, bringing hamburgers for a homecoming booth, chairing pet day, or attending the Gala, your efforts and participation were both needed and appreciated!

As I look ahead to the 2014-2015 year, I am filled with excitement (and a little terror!) because I now have a chance to provide the kind of leadership that will keep us moving forward. Fortunately for me, I won't be alone in this endeavor. I am surrounded by an exceptional 2014-2015 Board of Directors who will join me in helping us all to collaborate and communicate even more effectively as we look forward to another year's journey at Parker.

Here's to a great year!

Week of June 1, 2014

SUSAN SAYS:

Often it seems like I do my best thinking while I'm waiting for something.  This may seem odd (especially to those that know me well), because until this year, I was considered habitually tardy.  But all that changed.  As a matter of fact, a great number of things changed this year for me.  Being president of the Parker Parents Association gave me a unique perspective on, and the opportunity to interact with, many other parents.  I learned a lot...about them and about me.

This is my 39th (and final) blog post.  Parents@Parker, or P@P for the acronym savvy, has given me the chance to share my experiences with all of you.  This role may not have changed others' lives, but it did change mine.  Serving in this capacity was an honor, and a privilege for which I am very grateful.

I write today as I'm waiting for Commencement--that pinnacle of Parker matriculation--to begin.  The ceremony acknowledges the work and effort put forth by students, and the earnest support and encouragement from their families.  Congratulations to the Class of 2014 AND their parents.

This year, the Parents Association kept me informed, helped me learn better parenting techniques, and facilitated my social development.  And, thanks to 2014 Gala Co-Chairs/Volunteers Extraordinaire, Kim Alessio and Keitha Giannella and their team, we raised a gross total of over $667,000 that will go toward Student Scholarships and Faculty Fellowships.  I am also personally obliged to the 135 parents who stepped-up to lead a PA Committee or event, as well as those who served as Room Parents or Grade-Level Representatives--"thank you" seems hardly enough.  Finally, I am particularly indebted to my tireless 2013-14 Board of Directors: President-Elect Mary Taylor; Secretary Noelle Ludwig; Treasurer Caroline Coats; Lower School VPs Erik Keskinen and Kristie Diamond; Middle School VPs Elizabeth Carey and Fatin Mayberry; Upper School VPs Gayle Nuffer and Katherine Foster; VP-Communications Deanna Sampson; VP-Fundraising Marilyn Tobin, and VP-Parent Education Temple Zander, without whom none of this would have been possible.

I hope you can join me one final time this year, on Monday, June 2, 2014, for the Parents Association's Appreciation Breakfast in Nicholas Commons (on the Linda Vista Campus) at 9am; we'll celebrate our year, recognize some folks, and welcome the future.

Great memories and poignant stories will be available there, and on campus every day.  No waiting.

Week of May 25, 2014

SUSAN SAYS:

Our collective journey through the 2013-14 school year is almost at an end.  Wrap-up activities are calendared, and the Parents Association is now busy recruiting Room Parents, Grade Level Reps and Committee/Event Chairs for next year.  Please give these roles thoughtful consideration if you are called, and watch your email for opportunities to self-submit.  We need parent volunteers just like YOU.  As a matter of fact, there's still time to help out this year too--Grad Nite, for example--still needs a few extra sets of hands and eyes...just like YOURS.

To all this year's volunteers, I say THANK YOU.  I hope your experience was as fulfilling to you as it was enriching to all of us.

SUSAN SAYS:

A lot of life is based on luck.  The good kind and the bad kind.  Being in the right place at the right (or wrong) time.  So why make such a effort to afford our children a high-quality, challenging, and thought-provoking education?  Well, because luck is only one piece in the puzzle.

How we act upon, or react to, the situation presented, frequently determines the success of the outcome.  All of us are betting that the odds improve when the next generation of decision-makers can rely at least partially on Parker training and experience.

At this transitional time of year, with Commencement and promotions just around the corner, I can't help but reflect upon the diverse paths that all happened to coincide here...and I just have to think...aren't we lucky
