Parents @ Parker

Week of April 6, 2014

SUSAN SAYS:

Watching my son pack (READ: trying not to obviously wince as the carefully folded shirts and shorts are now wadded into unrecognizable balls) for his Discovery Week trip to Costa Rica, reminded me again of our good fortune in being able to attend a school like Francis Parker.  So many learning opportunities and social growth experiences--more good reasons to attend the Parents Association's annual fundraising Gala on May 10 (don't get left out--click here to make reservations or check out other ways to help support our School).  This event, along with a host of other service-focused committees, is chaired by parent volunteers (in the case of the Gala, Kim Alessio and Keitha Giannella).  On Monday, April 7 (at approximately 8:30am in the Lower School's Scripps Lecture Hall), we'll be voting on the 2014-15 slate of officers, and beginning the process to fill 40+ PA leadership positions for the coming year.  We'll also hear from Susie Walton on self-management and starting your kids on a path to independence.   Plan to attend and show your appreciation for those who have stepped up, and consider what you might want to do as well to help Parker in 2014-15.  See you then!

SUSAN SAYS:

With Global Trips behind us, and Discovery Week and Spring Break (soon) ahead, it's a time of travel for many in our community.  These opportunities to learn and grow outside the classroom are valuable on many levels, providing unique experiences and creating memories that will last a lifetime.  Your (automatic) membership in the Parker Parents Association also confers opportunities to learn and grow--take advantage of these occasions--starting with voting at/attending our next General Meeting on Monday, April 7, 2014, immediately following flag-raising (approximately 8:30am) in the Lower School's Scripps Lecture Hall.  Parenting Pro Susie Walton will discuss "Self-Management: How to Let Go and Start Your Kids on a Path to Independence," and you'll have a chance to vote on the 2014-15 slate of PA Officers, as well as some minor upgrades to the PA Bylaws.  You'll also get to meet and spend some great parent-to-parent time with others in our community; the trip is always more enjoyable with similarly-situated traveling companions.  Travel safe!

Week of March 23, 2014

SUSAN SAYS:

We all make mistakes.  Say things we don't mean.  Do things we shouldn't do.  Model all kinds of less-than-perfect behaviors.  It's tough to be a parent!  One person who's a pro at all this how-to-raise-your-kids-right stuff, is Susie Walton, leading expert on Family Dynamics and recipient of the San Diego Parent Educator of the Year Award.  We are very fortunate to have her as our guest speaker at the April 7 Parents Association General Meeting (approximately 8:30am in the Lower School's Scripps Lecture Hall, immediately following flag-raising), where she will offer insight into how parents can practice and encourage "self-management," in order to better prepare children for life ahead.  She'll talk about using mistakes as learning opportunities, with natural and logical consequences, and the different approaches for boys and girls.  Susie is an engaging and dynamic parent "who's been there," and is anxious to share her experiences and what she's learned about the challenges and joys of parenthood.

April 7 is also your opportunity to meet next year's slated PA leadership; please note that this is our annual referendum on any proposed revisions in PA Bylaws, as well as your chance to vote on these incoming Officers to the 2014-15 PA Board of Directors.

Don't forget to attend.  THAT would be a mistake.

SUSAN SAYS:

Below you will find the slate of officers nominated for the 2014-15 Parents Association Board of Directors--congratulations to all these volunteer leaders on your selection, and thank you to the Nominating Committee for your efforts on our behalf.  You will have the opportunity to vote on this slate at the April 7 General Meeting--mark your calendars.

Almost two years ago, my name first appeared on that roster, and the time since has been more rewarding, in more ways, than I could have imagined.  I have learned a lot about myself, as well as about life from the parent's perspective.  The PA must also secure over 40 parent volunteers willing to serve as Committee Chairs--please consider your interests and talents--we need your help and support to fill these positions as well.

You (and your contributions) enrich our entire parent community.  See you April 7.

SUSAN SAYS:

Sometimes I have a hard time finding my sunglasses, only to locate them on top of my head.  Seeing (and appreciating) what's right in front of us can, occasionally, be difficult.  It's like that with school, too.  We stop noticing how special this place is, and how lucky Parker students are.  How did so many get so fortunate?  Well, it's due to you--all of you--who support our annual fundraising efforts like the Parents Association's Gala, Mad About Parker (May 10 at the Hyatt Aventine).  Contributions made at these events help cover our School's most critical needs: Student Financial Aid and Faculty Professional Development, among other things.  I hope you will make the effort to participate at whatever level you can.  Truly, every dollar matters.
