Parents @ Parker

Week of January 25, 2015

MARY SAYS:

I know I’ve said this before, but 2015 is off to a great start! I had the pleasure of attending the Lower School Open House and found myself completely caught up in the magic that is the Lower School. From the beautiful giving tree to those amazing squires leading prospective families on tours, it was a wonderful showcase of all those things that make Parker special.

I’m also doing a happy dance because you all have no idea how hard the 2015 Gala Committee is working to make this year’s gala the best ever!  Future Gala meeting dates and times will be published in the Parent Association newsletter, so if you’re still thinking about getting involved, it’s not too late.  I say we all put April 25 on our calendars now because it’s a night no one will want to miss!

Lastly, I’d like to personally invite you all to our only evening General Meeting of the year!  On Monday, February 2 in Crivello Hall, our Parent Education committee will have a panel to help parents navigate and survive our students’ journey through the college application process. I look forward to seeing you there!

Week of January 18, 2015

MARY SAYS:

I’d like to thank Sophonya Simpson-Adams and the Parent Ed committee for an excellent presentation and discussion at our General Meeting this past Monday! Robert Greene, Senior Consultant and Leadership Coach from Jones and Associates gave our parents an informative and inspiring presentation on the benefits of enriching our Parker community through diversity and inclusion. Parker has been working with Jones and Associates to achieve its diversity and inclusion goals set forth in the Strategic Plan. We were fortunate to be given a taste of the great work already being done at Parker as a result of this collaboration.

Robert was an engaging and motivating speaker. He helped us all to understand that diversity and inclusion are not about fairness, but about excellence. He also taught us that the skill set needed for us all to be successful in this endeavor is something that can be learned. Our children are already ahead of us in this regard because the increasingly complex and diverse world they live in requires the ability to empathize, embrace diversity, and have minds and hearts that are open to change. Robert’s message was that the latest research supports the fact that in any situation, diversity of thought, background and experience yields excellence.

What I took away from this presentation was that as a parent, I have an important role to play in guiding my son’s journey towards being a true citizen of the world he will inherit.  I particularly enjoyed the discussion around the ideas of mirrors and windows. It became clear to me that we as parents are responsible for providing the context by which our children look at themselves (mirrors), as well as the world around them (windows). If their mirrors and windows are clear and uncluttered by (or at least aware of) bias, they will enjoy greater success in all areas of their lives.

At the end of this lively discussion, our facilitator gave us all actual tools to aid us in guiding both ourselves and our children towards success in this endeavor. It is my hope that the parents who attended were inspired and invigorated. If you missed it, never fear, we’ll be getting the highlights up on the Parent Association website soon.

MARY SAYS:

I would like to give a special shout out to the Parker Development team for hosting our best Alumni and Parent Networking event yet! If didn’t know it already, I know now beyond a doubt that the Parker network is awesome! It was so great to see our alums and current students making connections and learning about various industries and careers. What I was truly impressed by was the depth and breadth of talent and experience among the Parker parents.  As a whole, I think we’re a pretty amazing group! There were Parents and Alumni representing a wide variety of fields to include Architecture and Design, Biotechnology and Science, Healthcare, Education, Finance, and many more.  There were over 160 people in attendance and I truly hope that they left feeling as invigorated, connected, and inspired as I did. This event was the perfect way to kick off a great 2015!

Please remember to join us at our Parents Association General Meeting this Monday, January 12 at 8:30am in the Szekely Auditorium. I look forward to seeing you!

MARY SAYS:

Happy New Year!

Whether you’re one who makes New Year’s resolutions or not, it is my hope that 2015 brings you everything you hope for. I think this time of year is almost magical because the New Year gives us a brand new opportunity to do better, be better and feel better. I don’t know about you all, but I always appreciate the chance for a do over and plan to take full advantage of the opportunity.

Thanks to our wonderful army of parent volunteers, it has been a great year so far for the Parents Association at Parker! All I can say now is get ready, because there’s more to come! If you haven’t already signed up to attend the Networking event this Thursday, please do so. It promises to be time well spent! Also, please plan to join us at our General Meeting on Monday, January 12 where our Parent Education committee in conjunction with Jones and Associates Consulting will be bringing us another interactive and informative Parent Ed presentation on leadership and inclusion. I hope to see you all there!

MARY SAYS:

I think I may have said this before, but it definitely bears repeating. Whether you are a parent, student, alumnus, grandparent, teacher, or staff person, this is truly a great time to be at Parker! Since our Centennial Celebration I have felt a change in the air. It feels like we have become more connected to our community and to each other. Parker has put itself on the map both literally and figuratively and is establishing itself as a leading educational institution in San Diego and beyond. I have never been more proud to be a parent and supporter of our school! I can’t put my finger on the exact thing that has brought us to this point, but I can definitely say that the many opportunities provided for us to come together to both celebrate and support Parker have been a major contributing factor.

With this thought in mind, I encourage you all to attend the Parker Parent and Alumni Networking event on Thursday January 8 at 7pm.  The event will take place at the New Central Library downtown and it is a great opportunity to meet and network with other parents and Alumni.  In June of this year, this gathering drew over 150 people and was a great success! Events like this one provide us with a unique opportunity to connect with each other both socially and professionally. I hope to see you there!
