Parents @ Parker

Week of November 23, 2014

MARY SAYS:

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that like me, you are all incredibly busy people. Between the time we spend with our families, and the time we spend doing the jobs we get paid for (and those we don’t!), things can get a little hectic.  If you add the fact that there’s already Christmas music everywhere reminding us that we’re not ready for the holidays (okay, maybe I’m projecting here), you can start to really feel the pressure. Just when I was about to give in to the frenzy and go into full-on stress mode, I had a lovely and simple moment with my family that reminded me of just how much I have to be thankful for. That moment did wonders for me. I sometimes forget all the good stuff and get stuck worrying about all that I should be doing instead of taking time to revel in the fact that life is good.  I know it’s not Christmas yet, but if I could give you all a gift, it would be that moment that clarifies, reinforces and validates everything that is good in your lives. I hope that you have the time to enjoy your lives, no matter how crazy and hectic they are! There’s no better time than Thanksgiving to live in and enjoy that moment.

Happy Thanksgiving!

MARY SAYS:

If I didn’t know before that it’s a great time to be at Parker, it was abundantly clear at the Middle School Open House this past week. Over 130 families attended this event and it was truly a treat to meet and great so many prospective families. I was incredibly impressed with the Parker Middle School students who served as tour guides. They were informative, friendly, and represented the Parker Middle School well.  Through the eyes of the students and the families who attended, I was able to see Parker in a whole new way. Kudos to the Middle School and Admissions staff on a wonderful event!

Also, if you’re out there still looking for a way to get involved, please save the date and join us at our next Gala Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 10 at 8am in the Szekely Auditorium. We’ll see you there!

MARY SAYS:

I’d like to thank all of the parents who attended our November 3 General Meeting! After the business portion of the meeting was concluded, we had an informative presentation from our Parent Education Committee on the emotional health and development of our students. The discussion, moderated by our school psychologist, Bridgett Besinger and our school nurse, Maggie West, focused on tools to help parents understand when and how to seek support for our children and adolescents. Mental health professionals Dr. Shannon Lerach and Dr. Karen Anderson gave insightful and relevant presentations on ways to better understand our kids during their various stages of development and how we as parents can be more effective in recognizing when they need help and how to provide them with the support that they need. I hope that you all found it as timely and helpful as I did. I am truly looking forward to all that our Parent Education Committee has in store for us this year!

MARY SAYS:

ALIENS AND PUMPKINS AND CAKES, OH MY!

As a parent of a junior, I sometimes forget the unadulterated magic that is the Lower School. nowhere is that magic more evident than at the Halloween Carnival. And yes, the campus was defintiely magical because of the way it looked. The booths were set up, there was hay everywhere and the haunted house was beyond awesome. I looked at the cake display in the auditorium and the cakes were so clever and amazing that I had to take pictures. All these things were great, but I was most impressed by the literal army of parent volunteers working together to make this day an unforgettable one for our kids. I don't think I can effectively put into words the amount of dedication and attention to detail that went into bringing this day to life. I'd just like to say to every parent, whether you were in the forefront or behind the scenes, you are awesome and your work is truly appreciated. Thank you all for a spooky, awesome and impressive day!

MARY SAYS:

All I can say is WOW!

HOMECOMING WAS OVER THE TOP – THE BIG TOP!

Thank you, Anne Rauch and Doreen Genmark, for your leadership and dedication to plan and execute our homecoming day festivities.  You and your team of hardworking volunteers created a festive carnival for all ages to enjoy! Thank you Lower School Homecoming Chairs Erik Keskinen and Cindy Velazquez and Middle School Homecoming Chair Mark Arbogast. Your efforts truly made the day great for everyone!

Yolanda Selene Walther-Meade, thank you and your talented and creative team! Your vision transformed the Middle School Gym into Cirque Magnifique – THE place to be!

Kim Burnett and your team:  we appreciate your launching the Homecoming festivities with the Float Building Dinner.

Homecoming is a school wide celebration made successful and fun by the talented and generous Parker Family. I would love to name each and every one of you, but it would be a long blog indeed! Instead, I will simply say a huge and sincere THANK YOU to our amazing parents, alumni, volunteers, donors, students, faculty and staff! You nailed it!!!

And while I’m on a roll, I’d like to thank the Parker College Counseling department for an amazing and informative College Fair on Monday evening. I know I learned a lot from the sessions I attended and I’m sure that other parents and students did as well.

And since the hits just keep on coming, I look forward to seeing you at our Lower School Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 31 and our November General Meeting on Monday, November 3!
