Parents @ Parker

Week of December 14, 2014

MARY SAYS:

I think I may have said this before, but it definitely bears repeating. Whether you are a parent, student, alumnus, grandparent, teacher, or staff person, this is truly a great time to be at Parker! Since our Centennial Celebration I have felt a change in the air. It feels like we have become more connected to our community and to each other. Parker has put itself on the map both literally and figuratively and is establishing itself as a leading educational institution in San Diego and beyond. I have never been more proud to be a parent and supporter of our school! I can’t put my finger on the exact thing that has brought us to this point, but I can definitely say that the many opportunities provided for us to come together to both celebrate and support Parker have been a major contributing factor.

With this thought in mind, I encourage you all to attend the Parker Parent and Alumni Networking event on Thursday January 8 at 7pm.  The event will take place at the New Central Library downtown and it is a great opportunity to meet and network with other parents and Alumni.  In June of this year, this gathering drew over 150 people and was a great success! Events like this one provide us with a unique opportunity to connect with each other both socially and professionally. I hope to see you there!

Week of December 7, 2014

MARY SAYS:

I know this sounds like a great big cliché, but I really don’t know where this year has gone. It seems like it was just yesterday when I wrote my first blog as PA President and here we are in December. What I do know is that I am truly in awe of the talent, time and treasure that Parker parents have contributed thus far this year. It has been a great fall! We have enjoyed fellowship at parent dinners, put on fabulous  events like Homecoming and the Halloween Carnival, and educated ourselves through exceptional Parent Education events.  We’ve also done a great job in giving to Parker. The Giving Tuesday campaign was a great success and I’d like to give a shout out to everyone who participated!

The only thing better than what we’ve accomplished thus far, is what we have to look forward to in 2015. If you haven’t figured out how to get involved, it is not too late. If you are interested in PA leadership, our nominating process will begin soon and we welcome your interest and involvement. Planning for our 2015 Gala will kick into high gear and we need your help, so please come out and join us at the Next Gala meeting on December 10. In short, it’s going to be a great 2015 and we need your help and involvement to make it the best year ever!

Week of November 30, 2014

MARY SAYS:

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that like me, you are all incredibly busy people. Between the time we spend with our families, and the time we spend doing the jobs we get paid for (and those we don’t!), things can get a little hectic.  If you add the fact that there’s already Christmas music everywhere reminding us that we’re not ready for the holidays (okay, maybe I’m projecting here), you can start to really feel the pressure. Just when I was about to give in to the frenzy and go into full-on stress mode, I had a lovely and simple moment with my family that reminded me of just how much I have to be thankful for. That moment did wonders for me. I sometimes forget all the good stuff and get stuck worrying about all that I should be doing instead of taking time to revel in the fact that life is good.  I know it’s not Christmas yet, but if I could give you all a gift, it would be that moment that clarifies, reinforces and validates everything that is good in your lives. I hope that you have the time to enjoy your lives, no matter how crazy and hectic they are! There’s no better time than the holidays to live in and enjoy the moment.

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Week of November 16, 2014

MARY SAYS:

If I didn’t know before that it’s a great time to be at Parker, it was abundantly clear at the Middle School Open House this past week. Over 130 families attended this event and it was truly a treat to meet and great so many prospective families. I was incredibly impressed with the Parker Middle School students who served as tour guides. They were informative, friendly, and represented the Parker Middle School well.  Through the eyes of the students and the families who attended, I was able to see Parker in a whole new way. Kudos to the Middle School and Admissions staff on a wonderful event!

Also, if you’re out there still looking for a way to get involved, please save the date and join us at our next Gala Committee meeting on Wednesday, December 10 at 8am in the Szekely Auditorium. We’ll see you there!
