Coach Herman's Weekly Sports Wrap for the Week of March 19
Track and Field
On Thursday, March 22, our track teams competed against LJCD and Santa Fe Christian at Clairemont High. Our boys defeated SFC 74-57 and LJCD 71-64. Our girls defeated LJCD 62-28 and lost to SFC 53-69. Maya Jackson and Gordie Silver both won the shot and discus. Colin Grey won the pole vault and the high jump. Duncan Tomlin had the top times in the 1600m and 3200m. Cecila Smith won both the 100 hurdles and the 300 hurdles.
Other event winners over both the Torreys and Eagles were Alex Jones 400m, Sasha Stephens 100m, and Nishon Tyler in the 800m. Finally both of our 4x400m relay teams came in first place. The boys’ team consisted of Grayson Lang, Noah Gamboa, Ayman Mayberry, and Alex Jones. The runners for the winning girls’ team were Madison Gerace, Nishon Tyler, Sasha Stephens, and Christina Clark.
On Saturday the Lancers had a big day at the Calvin Christian Small Schools Invitational. Gordie Silver won the shot with a throw of 43’10” and the discus with a toss of 127’ 08”. Colin Grey came in second place in the high jump with a leap of 5’10”. Christina Clark won the fr/so 400m with a time of 1:06.42. Nishon Tyler ran 2:37.28 and came in second in the fr/so 800m. Cecilia Smith won the fr/so 100m hurdles with a time of 19.61. Alex Jones came in second place in the fr/so 400m with a fine time of 54.41. Finally Madison Gerace won the varsity discus with a throw of 85’05”. Great job, Lancers!
On Monday, March 19, our team lost on the road to Grossmont High. The Lancers were led by Keenan Salvati who scooped up six ground balls and Andy Piacquadio who took six shots. The team battled hard throughout the game and made improvement clearing the ball.
On Thursday, the Lancers defeated Foothills Christian 15-4. Kevin Wellis lead the offensive onslaught with 6 goals. Andy Piacquadio scored four goals and had two assists. Milan Marrero “scorched the nets” with three goals and had one assist.
Our team played three matches last week. On Monday, March 19, the Lancers lost a close match 7-5 to Ramona. Lancer goals were scored by Glennon Waters, Nancy Mendez, Hannah Schneider, Katie Volker and Kara Jones. They were leading till late in the second half. Becca Jacobs was outstanding in goal making 16 saves.
On Tuesday, the Lancers defeated Granite Hills 12-6 on Lauer Field. Nancy Mendez and Claire Ready each scored three goals to lead the team. Glennon Waters, Hannah Schneider and Katie Volker all scored two goals in the big win.
Finally, on Thursday the Lancer lost to San Marcos 12-6. Claire Ready led the team in scoring with three goals. Becca Jacobs made 13 saves in goal.
Our baseball team defeated Escondido Charter 3-0 on Saturday, March 23. Josh Leibowitz went two for three with a double and a run scored. Nate Glasser was one for three with an RBI. Robert Mahoney and Jose Vizcaino each had a hit and a run scored. Christian Jimenez pitched six innings of shutout ball and Josh Leibowitz pitched a scoreless 7th inning for the save.
Our softball team played five games last week. On Tuesday, March 20, the Lancers defeated Santa Fe Christian 5-0 in their Coastal League opener. Jackie Buechler pitched a no-hitter and had 11 strikeouts. Rebecca Dvorak went two for three and had two RBI’s. Carly Wallace was two for three and scored a run. Jackie Buechler had the other RBI for the Lancers.
On Thursday, the Lancers knocked off OLP 10-0. Jackie Buechler and Sarah Ogle combined for a one hitter. Suzanna Tomey was two for three with a run and RBI. Jackie Buechler had four RBI’s and scored two runs. Kate Pasterkiewicz and Kim Svatos each went one for two and had two RBI’s.
On Friday, the Lancer beat Gaujome Park 9-1. Kate Pasterkiewicz went 2 for 3 and had 2 RBI’s. Kim Svatos also went 2 for 3 and had 2 RBI’s. Jackie Buechler went 2 for 4 and pitched six innings of one hit ball. On Saturday, the Lancers lost to Madison and Imperial.
On Monday, March 19, the Lancers defeated San Diego Jewish Academy 13-5. Michael Baddour made his varsity debut winning two of his sets 6-2, and 6-4.
On Tuesday our boys soundly defeated Army-Navy. Our singles players Aaron Meltzer, Ivan Jichi, Adam Lohnes, and Pedro Gallardo swept all of their sets. The doubles team of Alec Morgan and Sebastian Fernandez swept their sets 6-0,6-0,6-1. Foster Collins and Hamilton Southworth also swept their sets by the same score. Finally Vishnu Pokala and Zach Cohn swept their three sets.
On Thursday, the Lancers defeated Tri City Christian 16-2. Hamilton Southworth won the two sets he played 6-2 6-2. Nils Green teamed up with Foster Collins to win their sets 6-2,6-1,6-1.
Volleyball lost a tough five game match to La Jolla on Tuesday, March 20. Coleman Baker had 19 kills on 65 swings and seven ace serves. Connor Polk found the floor for seven kills and Mitch Bremermann had six. David Nussbaum had 43 assists. On Wednesday, the Lancers defeated University City 25-18, 25-12, 25-21. Connor Polk had 10 kills on 18 attempts. Jake Siegler had 5 kills and 4 blocks. Finally on Friday, the Lancers lost a tight three game match to Mt. Carmel. Coleman Baker led the team in kills with 13. David Nussbaum had 23 assists and had five kills in eight attempts.
On Tuesday, March 20, our golfers defeated Santa Fe Christian 219-228 at Riverwalk Golf Course. Nahum Mendoza shot a 38 and was the medalist (low scorer for both teams). Ross Nicol and Charlie Haynes each shot a 43 for the Lancers.
On Wednesday, The Lancers lost to LJCD at Del Mar Country Club. Nahum Mendoza shot an even par 36 and again was the medalist. Ross Nicol shot a 45 and again had the second low score for the Lancers. Zach Gleicher shot 46 to aid the cause.
