Coach Herman's Sports Wrap for the Week of April 2

Baseball

Last week our baseball team played five games in the 3A division of the Lions Tournament. The Lancers opened up with an 8-3 victory over Orange Glen on Monday, April 2. Jose Vizcaino went 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Robert Mahoney was 2 for 2 with an RBI and 3 runs scored. Drew Imhoff continued to hit the ball well with 2 hits in 4 at bats.

On Tuesday, the boys knocked off Central High from the Imperial Valley, 7-3. Josh Leibowitz went 3 for 3 with two RBI’s and three runs scored. Drew Imhoff was 2 for 3 with two doubles and two RBI’s. Jake Wiegand and Jose Vizciano each contributed two hits. Nate Glasser pitched two innings and allowed no runs.

On Wednesday, the Lancers lost a tight game 8-7 to Kearney. Nate Glasser went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored. Jonah Davis was 2 for 3 with 2 RBI’s. Jonathon Vizcaino was 2 for 4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Christian Jimenez pitched five innings and allowed just one earned run.

On Thursday, the Lancers qualified for the championship round by virtue of winning their pool earlier in the week. In the semifinals, they defeated Southwest 5-1. Jake Glasser was 2 for 2 with an RBI and a run scored. Jake Wiegand was 2 for 4 with a double. Jake Glasser and Josh Leibowitz combined for a four hitter and allowed just one earned run.

In the championship game The Lancers ran into a very good pitcher and lost 6-1. There were few offensive highlights. Drew Imhoff had an RBI and Robert Mahoney scored the lone run. Jose Vizcaino did make numerous fine defensive plays in the field and the team turned three double plays. Robert Mahoney pitched five innings and allowed only one earned run.

UT Athletes of the Week

Congratulations to Jackie Buechler '13 and David Lauer '12 who were both chosen as UT Athletes of the Week.

Jackie Buechler '13 pitched no-hitters against Santa Fe Christian, Our Lady of Peace and Escondido Charter. She also hurled a one-hitter against Guajome Park. At the plate, Buechler went 7-for-17 over the past two weeks with 11 RBI.

David Lauer '12 had 19 kills in a nonleague loss to Carlsbad and came back with 32 kills in a five-game victory over St. Augustine, which last season ended the Lancers’ run of 11 straight section titles. Francis Parker School is now tied for the Western League lead.

Fall 2012 Practice Start Dates

Mark your calendars: Fall practices start on Monday, August 13 for most sports except for football. Football practice will start on Wednesday, August 8. Check back in mid-May on the US Athletics main page for exact dates and times for each sport.
