Coach Herman's Sports Wrap for the Week of 5/7 – 5/11
Congratulations to Duncan Tomlin who was selected as the 2012 CIF/Farmers Boys Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He was chosen from a pool of 453 candidates representing more than 1500 schools. Duncan will be honored at the State Capitol on the Senate and Assembly floors on Thursday, June 7.
Track and Field
Congratulations to our boys’ track team which won a piece of their first Coastal Conference Championship since 1996. Our boys’ and girls’ teams both competed on a beautiful day last Wednesday, May 9, at Clairemont High. Athletes who came in first or second in their events qualified for the CIF prelims that will be held on Saturday, May 20 at Mt. Carmel High School.
The boys’ squad was led by Duncan Tomlin and the Athlete of the Meet, Gordon Silver. Duncan won the 1600m in a time of 4:21.01 and he came in first in the 3200m with a time of 9:50.63. Gordon won the shot put with a school record throw of 47-07.50 and he won the discus with a throw of 131-03. Sophomore Alex Jones came in second in the 400m with a time of 52.13. Colin Grey won the high jump at 5’ 9” and came very close to a meet record of 6’0 1/4”. Our 4 x 400m relay team of Nate Abernethy, Ayman Mayberry, Noah Gamboa, and Alex Jones came in second place and qualified for the CIF Prelims.
Our girls’ team was led by Maya Jackson who won the shot put with a throw of 34-01 and came in second in the discus. Coming in second in the 400m and qualifying for the CIF prelims was Christina Clark with a time of 1:04.48. Nishon Tyler came in second in the 800m with a time of 2:33.05 and she finished third in the 400m. In the 100m hurdles, Cecilia Smith came in second with a time of 18.71. Finally, Madison Gerace won the discus with a throw of 99.04.
Our boys’ tennis team competed in the CIF Team Championships last week. On Tuesday 5/8 the Lancers defeated High Tech High 16-2 in first round action. Eric Miller swept his three single sets 6-0. Adam Lohnes also swept all three of his singles sets. In doubles, the teams of Foster Collins/Nils Green and Zach Cohn/Vishnu Pokala swept all three of their doubles sets.
In the CIF quarterfinals on Wednesday, the Lancers tied #5 Coronado in sets 9-9 and edged them out on points 91-67. Singles players Aaron Meltzer, Eric Miller, and Adam Lohnes won eight of nine sets and outscored their opponents in games 52-12 to help secure the victory. The doubles team of Everett Waterman and Hamilton Southworth won a set 6-3 against the Islanders which was instrumental to the team’s success.
On Thursday, the Lancers lost to eventual CIF Champion La Jolla 12-6. Aaron Meltzer won two of his three sets and Eric Miller swept his three sets for five of the teams six points. The doubles team of Everett Waterman and Zack Cohn won a set for our teams other point.
Our baseball team played two games last week against Santa Fe Christian and Castle Park. On Thursday, May 10, the Lancers travelled to Santa Fe Christian and lost 3-1 in a tight, well-played game. Jose Vizcaino and Nate Glasser each had a hit for the Lancers. The lone run was “knocked in” by Hank Childs. Christian Jimenez turned in a fine performance on the mound pitching five innings and allowing only two earned runs.
On Friday, the Lancers played one of their better games of the year defeating Castle Park 3-0. Robert Mahoney was the hitting star going 4-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Drew Imhoff went 1-for-2 with one RBI and Jake Glasser went 1-for-1 with a run scored. Jake Wiegand pitched five innings allowing only two hits and no earned runs. Seniors Jose Vizcaino, Drew Imhoff, Josh Leibowitz and Mark Traganza were honored before the game for their years of dedication to the Parker Baseball program.
Our softball team finished up their Coastal League season with a 9-3 record (14-7 overall) after their two big league wins last week over Horizon and Bishops. On Tuesday, May 8, the Lancers knocked off the Panthers 5-0. Natalie Contreras was 3-for-3 with two doubles and a run scored. Jackie Buechler was 2-for-3 with two RBI’s and she pitched seven innings of shutout ball with seven strikeouts.
On Thursday, the Lancers defeated Bishops 11-0 in five innings. Suzanna Tomey was 3-for-4 with three RBI’s and two runs scored. Natalie Contreras went 3-for-4 with a RBI and four runs scored. Carly Wallace was 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Finally, Jackie Buechler pitched a three hit shutout and was 2-for-2 at the plate with two RBI’s.
Seniors Michelle McElroy, Asha Walker, and Christina Noonan were honored in a ceremony after game with the Knights.
Our volleyball team won their CIF quarterfinal match 25-14, 25-10, and 25-18 over Escondido Adventist on Friday, May 11. Jake Siegler had 12 kills in 22 swings. David Lauer hammered down 11 kills and Connor Polk had three kills. Rukman Thota and David Nussbaum each had two ace serves to lead the team. 6’5” setter David Nussbaum had 32 assists.
Duncan Tomlin and Zack Emge competed last weekend in the ITU World Triathlon that was held here in San Diego. Both boys completed the full Olympic distance, which includes a 1.5km swim, 40km bike race, and 10km run. Duncan won his age group and came in 10th overall among all 1142 competitors.
