On April 20, Jamal Edwards '12 was named a Gates Millennium Scholar. This scholarship, made possible by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is awarded annually to 1,000 students across the United States. The scholarship will support Jamal's studies from his undergraduate work at Duke University this fall through his doctoral degree.
In addition to financial support, the program provides personal and professional development through various leadership opportunities. The goal of the Gates Millennium Scholar award is to, "...promote academic excellence and to provide an opportunity for outstanding minority students with significant financial need to reach their highest potential." Parker's previous winner of this incredible honor was Damien Robinson '06.
When describing her reaction to the announcement, Science Department Chair Susan Moerder said, "In the short time Jamal has been on this campus he has touched the hearts of many...His great smile and warm heart touch all who encounter him."
Jamal has also been recognized as a 2011-2012 Discus Award winner for his achievements in the areas of Government, Work, and Community Service. A multimedia profile highlighting his achievements may be viewed in the Discus Awards Winners Gallery.
