Student Advances to National Spelling Bee Finals
Posted 05/31/2012 02:25PM

Parker 8th-grader Snigdha Nandipati spelled all three of her semifinal round words correctly to advance on to tonight's Scripps National Spelling Bee finals. She is one of only nine spellers remaining out of the 278 that began the contest on Tuesday.

The final rounds this evening will be shown live on ESPN beginning at 5pm San Diego time. The finals will also be streamed live on ESPN3. Nandipati will be the first speller to compete in the finals Thursday evening.

She advanced by spelling “stochastically” in round four, becoming the last student from California in the competition, before spelling “compas” in round five. Nandipati would then calmly spell “rhonchus” in the sixth round to advance on to the finals.

Out of the millions across the country that participated in local competitions, the Scripps National Spelling Bee consisted of 278 contestants from across the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea.
