Standardized Test Prep Program

At the Learning Center, small-group classes prepare Parker students for success on the PSAT, SAT, and ACT.

Class meetings are scheduled to accommodate the majority of participants. Please share your scheduling preferences with Lorna Kocian at lkocian@francisparker.org

Class sizes are limited. Most sessions are held in Parker Learning Center or the College Counseling Center. Learn more by clicking on the links below:

2016 SAT and ACT preparation

ACT Preparation

ACT Science Bootcamp

Saturday, Feb. 27, 3:00-5:00, $110

Students will learn key strategies to help them work more efficiently.  Multiple passages will be explained.   Students will complete a full test section and receive a score.

 

Learning from the Practice ACT

Sunday, Feb. 28, 10:30-1:30, $165

By popular demand, one final section of this course is offered.  All problems missed by students enrolled will be explained.  Key underlying concepts will be discussed in-depth so students leave with a full understanding of the material covered by the test. 

 

Grammar and Punctuation on the SAT and ACT

Sunday, Feb. 28, 3:00-5:00, $110

This class is geared to both SAT- and ACT-takers.   Students will receive a new, expanded grammar and punctuation handout that delves into key concepts that appear on the English/Writing and Language sections of the tests.  Practice passages will be presented.

 

ACT Math Mini-Bootcamp

Wednesday, March 9, 3:15-4:30, $70

The most common, difficult problems on the Math section of the ACT will be explained.  Problems will be grouped by topic so that students leave with a full understanding of each concept covered. 

 

ACT Reading Bootcamp

Sunday, March 13, 2:00-4:00, $110

Students will learn how to work more efficiently on the Reading passages.  Students will complete multiple passages, grade them, and learn from their mistakes. 

 

Take a Practice ACT and Learn How to Solve Problems Missed

Saturday, March 12, 8:00 to noon and Monday, March 14, 10:00-1:00, $195

The practice ACT will take place on Saturday morning, and tests will be graded by Monday, when problems missed by students enrolled will be explained. 

 

ACT Essay Mini-Bootcamp

Wednesday, March 16, 3:15-4:30, $70

Students will master the Writing portion of the ACT.  Multiple sample essays and exemplary responses will be presented. 

 

ACT English Mini-Bootcamp

Thursday, March 17, 3:15-4:30,  $70

Students will put grammar and punctuation rules to work on a real ACT English test. 

 

Take a Practice ACT and Learn How to Solve Problems Missed

Saturday, March 26, 8:00 to noon and Sunday, March 27, 9:00-noon, $195

The practice ACT will take place on Saturday morning, and tests will be graded by Sunday, when problems missed by students enrolled will be explained. 

 

ACT Math Bootcamp II

Wednesday, March 30, 3:15-4:30, $70

Common topics on the Math section of the ACT will be explained, and problems galore will be presented.

 

ACT Wrap-Up

Wednesday, April 6, 3:15-4:45, $85

Final reminders on each section of the test will be provided. Ideas on how to conquer test anxiety will also be offered. Practice problems will be significant part of the review. 

 

SAT Preparation

SAT High-Flying Math Mini-Bootcamp

Wednesday, March 2, 3:15-4:30, $70

Common, difficult problems on the math sections of the SAT will be grouped by category and explained fully. Among other challenging topics, statistics and probability word problems will be covered. This class is geared to high-scoring students who wish to further improve their scores.

 

SAT Total Math

Thursday, March 3, 3:15-4:30, $70

Common problems of all levels of difficulty will be explained.  An equation sheet and concept summary will be provided.

 

SAT Math Bootcamp

Sunday, March 13, 4:00-5:30, $85

Students will learn how to solve complicated word problems.   Although special attention will be given to topics covered less fully by the traditional curriculum, many different types of problems will be covered, and students can feel free to request particular topics prior to the class. 

 

SAT Writing and Language Mini-Bootcamp

Wednesday, March 23, 3:10-4:25, $70

Students will put grammar and punctuation rules to work on an SAT Writing and Language test. 

 

SAT Practice  All-Around

Thursday, March 31, 3:15-4:30, $70

One Reading passage, one Writing and Language Passage, and many math problems will be presented.  Students will be reminded of all strategies, grammar rules, and math concepts in order to reinforce previous lessons.

Individual Test Prep Tutoring

Individual test prep tutoring is available during free periods, lunch, and some after-school and weekend hours.

Recommended workbooks: The College Board's The Official SAT Study Guide (2016 Edition) or Peterson's The Real ACT Prep Guide. Both books include practice tests. In addition to one-on-one support, students receive handout materials and other resources to build understanding and skills.

Scheduling: Please email Lorna Kocian to arrange times for individual tutoring.

Cost: $95 per one-hour session

Most sessions are held in the College Counseling/Learning Center upstairs in the Peters Family Building. Fees will be billed to student accounts.

Registration and Cancellation Policy

Email Ms. Kocian before the first session. Registration confirmation is sent by email. Class registration may be canceled up to one week before start date without incurring charges.

Individual tutoring sessions must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations with less than a 24-hour notices will incur a 50 percent cancellation fee.

Make-up classes/sessions will be scheduled based the availability and discretion of the teacher; outlines and materials will be made available for the missed class or session.

about Lorna Kocian

Lorna is an experienced teacher who has been supporting San Diego Students for more than 18 years.

Prior to creating her own test preparation business, Lorna worked with students in the Parker Learning Center. Lorna has used her years of experience with standardized testing to create many of her own materials, which will be used in the Parker program. Her expertise has been validated by the successes of the students she has taught.
