Standardized Test Prep Program

At the Learning Center, small-group classes prepare Parker students for success on the PSAT, SAT and ACT.

Class meetings are scheduled to accommodate the majority of participants. Please share your scheduling preferences with Lorna Kocian at lkocian@francisparker.org

Class sizes are limited. Most sessions are held in Parker Learning Center or the College Counseling Center. Learn more by clicking on the links below:

ACT Test Preparation Classes

Zinger Grammar for all the tests (SAT, PSAT, and ACT) $110
Sunday, Aug. 3rd
, 2:00-4:00

Learn the grammar rules necessary to ace the SAT, PSAT, and ACT. Zinger Grammar booklets will be distributed. Students will apply this knowledge to various timed test segments. This is an opportunity for juniors to see the differences between the SAT and the ACT in the English/Writing areas. This is a great review for seniors retaking any tests in the fall.

ACT Reading $85
Wednesday, Aug. 6th
, 5:15-6:45

The ACT Reading section is straightforward, but difficult to finish in the time allotted. Students will receive strategies to maximize their performance and will complete timed passages.

ACT Science $110
Thursday, Aug. 7th
, 10:00-noon

Learn the strategies to ace this section of the test by speeding up and improving focus. Students will complete timed test segments.

ACT English $110
Thursday, Aug. 7th
, 1:00-3:00

The ACT English section tests students on not only grammar, but also punctuation and content. Students will receive tips, strategies, and grammar and punctuation rules. Students will practice with timed passages.

ACT Math $85
Wednesday, Aug. 13th
, 5:15-6:45

Students will receive a math equation sheet to study. Many common, difficult problems on the ACT Math section will be explained.

Take a Practice ACT $240
Saturday, Aug. 16th, 8:00 to noon and Sunday, Aug. 17th
, 9:00 to noon

The exam will be administered on Saturday. Students will receive scores and explanations of all problems missed on Sunday.

ACT Science II $110
Thursday, Aug. 21st
, 10:00 to noon

Learn the strategies to ace this section of the test by speeding up and improving focus. Students will complete timed test segments. The test distributed will be different from any tests the students have previously been provided.

ACT English with Essay Instruction $110
Thursday, Aug. 21st
, 1:00-3:00

Grammar, punctuation, and strategies will be reviewed. Students will complete new multiple-choice passages. The last segment of the class will be dedicated to instruction on how to ace the essay portion of the test.

ACT Math II $110
Wednesday, Aug. 27th
, 3:30-5:30

Math concepts will be reviewed. Many common, difficult problems will be explained. Students will complete timed test segments.

ACT Practice
Thursday, Aug. 28th, 9:00-noon

At least three sections of the ACT will be reviewed, and sample test sections will be administered for practice. Difficult questions will be explained.

ACT Reading and English $165
Wednesday, Sept. 3rd
, 2:30-5:30

Strategies to ace the English and Reading sections of the ACT will be reviewed. Sample passages from real ACTs will be discussed. Students will have an opportunity to try timed test segments.

ACT Science and Math $165
Thursday, Sept. 4th
, 2:30-5:30

Strategies to ace the Science and Math sections of the ACT will be reviewed. Sample passages and problems from real ACTs will be discussed. Students will have an opportunity to try timed test segments.

ACT Wrap-Up $110
Wednesday, Sept. 10th
, 2:30-4:30

Final tips and reminders will be provided. All sections of the ACT will be discussed.

Students will receive “Zinger” math workbooks and will complete the entire workbook, full of the common, difficult problems on the SAT and PSAT math sections.

SAT/PSAT Critical Reading with Vocabulary Word Roots $110
Wednesday, Aug. 13th, 3:15-5:15

Students will learn strategies to ace the Critical Reading section of the test and will receive an eight-page handout with the most popular word roots, with SAT words listed for each root. Students will complete timed passages and vocabulary questions.

Take a Practice SAT $240
Saturday, Aug. 16th, 1:00-5:00 and Sunday, Aug. 17th, 1:00-4:00

The exam will be administered on Saturday. Students will receive scores and explanations of all problems missed on Sunday.

SAT Zinger Math II $120
Wednesday, Aug. 20th, 3:30-5:30

Common, difficult problems on the SAT Math section will be explained. An equation sheet for study will be provided. Zinger Math II is not a repeat of Zinger Math I. All problems discussed will be different from those problems explained during the August 6th class. This class is designed to further refine students’ math skills.

SAT Zinger Writing with Essay Instruction $110
Thursday, Aug. 21st, 3:00-5:00

Grammar rules will be reviewed. A new Writing test will be explained. The last segment of the class will be dedicated to instruction on how to ace the essay portion of the test.

SAT/PSAT Practice $110
Friday, Aug. 29th, 10:00 to noon

Math, Critical Reading, and Writing will be reviewed. Sample test sections will be administered for practice. Difficult questions will be explained.

The exam will be administered on Saturday, 8:00 to noon. Students will receive scores and explanations of all problems missed on Sunday, 9:00 to noon.

SAT Zinger Math $120
Wednesday, Sept. 17th, 2:30-4:30

Students will receive “Zinger” math workbooks and will complete the entire workbook, full of the common, difficult problems on the SAT and PSAT math sections. Each Zinger Math class presents new math problems so students benefit from attending more than one.

SAT Zinger Grammar $110
Thursday, Sept. 18th, 2:30-4:30

Grammar rules critical to acing the Writing section will be reviewed. A full Writing test will be explained. Students will have the opportunity to try timed test segments.

SAT Critical Reading $110
Wednesday, Sept. 24th, 2:30-4:30

Strategies to increase reading efficiency and ace reading questions as well as vocabulary word roots will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to complete timed test segments.

Saturday, Sept. 27th and Sunday Sept. 28th

The exam will be administered on Saturday, 8:00 to noon. Students will receive scores and explanations of all problems missed on Sunday, 9:00 to noon.

PSAT Overview (section 1) $165
Sunday, Sept. 28th
, 2:00-5:00

This class familiarizes students with each section of the PSAT: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. One hour will be spent on each topic. Students will be provided with a PSAT booklet that includes tips, strategies, an equation sheet and grammar rules to study, and a sample PSAT.

SAT Math Practice $110
Wednesday, Oct. 1st
, 2:30-4:30

Math test sections will be explained. An equation sheet will be provided to study. Students will work through common medium and difficult math problems.

SAT Writing Practice $110
Thursday, Oct 2nd
, 2:30-4:30

SAT Writing test sections will be explained. Zinger Grammar handouts will be provided. Students will complete timed test segments. The SAT essay will be explained, and sample prompts will be presented for discussion.

SAT Critical Reading and Vocabulary $110
Friday, Oct. 3rd
, 2:30-4:30

Tips and strategies to ace the Critical Reading section will be reviewed. A new vocabulary handout will be provided. Students will complete timed test segments.

SAT Wrap-Up $110
Wednesday, Oct. 8th
, 2:30-4:30

This is a final review. All test sections will be covered.

PSAT Overview (section 2) $165

Early Bird Test Prep—Writing the “Perfect 12” Essay $55
Friday, Sept. 5th, 7:00-8:00 a.m.

This class prepares students to write exemplary essays that will score high on either the ACT or the SAT. (“12” is a perfect essay score.)

Individual Test Prep Tutoring

Individual test prep tutoring is available during free periods, lunch and some after-school and weekend hours.

Recommended workbooks: The College Board's The Official SAT Study Guide or Peterson's The Real ACT Prep Guide. Both books include practice tests. In addition to one-on-one support, students receive handout materials and other resources to build understanding and skills.

Scheduling: Please email Lorna Kocian to arrange times for individual tutoring.

Cost: $95 per one-hour session

Most sessions are held in the College Counseling/Learning Center upstairs in the Peters Family Building. Fees will be billed to student accounts.

Registration and Cancellation Policy

Email Ms. Kocian before the first session. Registration confirmation is sent by email. Class registration may be canceled up to one week before start date without incurring charges.

Individual tutoring sessions must be cancelled at least 24 hours in advance. Cancellations with less than a 24-hour notices will incur a 50 percent cancellation fee.

Make-up classes/sessions will be scheduled based the availability and discretion of the teacher; outlines and materials will be made available for the missed class or session.

about Lorna Kocian


Lorna is an experienced teacher/tutor who has been supporting San Diego Students for more than 15 years.

Prior to creating her own tutoring business, Lorna worked with students in the Parker Learning Center. Lorna has used her years of experience with standardized testing to create many of her own materials, which will be used in the Parker program. Her expertise has been validated by the successes of the students she has taught.
