Visual and performing arts courses are a daily part of the Upper School curriculum. Instruction and performance opportunities allow students to develop their talents and prepare them for advanced studies in the arts at the university level.
The range of visual arts courses in the Upper School include ceramics, sculpture (bronze and stone), woodworking, video, photography, drawing, painting and digital design. Courses give students the experience of producing original works of art from concept to completion. Formal elements and principles of design are introduced and emphasized with an appreciation of a diverse global artistic heritage. Students are encouraged to create personal works of art appropriate for their skill level in Parker's state-of-the-art studio facilities.PERFORMING ARTS
Parker musicians perform at important School events such as Spring Arts Night and Commencement, as well as at school assemblies, lunchtime concerts, athletic events, the Holiday Concert, and several major talent shows throughout the year. Upper School ensembles include Acappella Anonymous, Classical Guitar, Contemporary Guitar, Instrumental Ensemble (concert and jazz band), Orchestra, and Pep Band. In addition, many small groups also form during the year to rehearse and perform music for special occasions. Student musicians have the opportunity to perform and compete in off-campus venues including community events and the annual Forum Music Festival in Anaheim.
The Upper School Drama Program
builds on the techniques students learn in Middle School Drama. The program develops confidence, active listening, and advanced improvisational skills. Textual analysis of plays, as well as learning the techniques of creating a character, are emphasized. Students study the acting methods of Stanislavski, Adler, Hagen and Meisner, and perform two presentations throughout the school year. Shows for the 2018-19 school year include:
- She Kills Monsters
- Spring Awakening
- The Lion King
The Musical Theater elective emphasizes preparation of material, performance skills and stage presence. Students present various songs in class and learn techniques for speaking, singing and moving in character. Students develop and strengthen audition repertoire while researching and presenting varying musical theater styles and genres.
The Parker Dance Company provides an opportunity for advanced dancers at the Upper School level to learn advanced choreography that showcases their talents and features them in annual dance performances throughout the year, as well as in Spring Arts Night and other performance opportunities. Students at an advanced level are invited to audition in the fall for selection into the Company.
