Lancers Take a Trip to Monarch School in Barrio Logan

Last May, James Chen and Izzy Lyons from the Class of 2032 visited the Monarch School in Barrio Logan. They donated gifts on behalf of Francis Parker School and spoke with program coordinator Allison Tait. James and Izzy learned about how this school uplifts its student population, many of whom are unhoused, through reinforced positivity and holistic educational programming.

Through in-depth academic and emotional support, the Monarch School aims to create a safe and learning environment for students. The school provides basic necessities, such as food, clean clothes, and transportation, to help students focus on their learning. Students can also participate in sports, clubs, dance, and other extracurricular activities. This intentional programming ensures that students feel respected and have access to the same opportunities as all other students in their age group, regardless of housing situation.

To ensure students return to class each day, the Monarch School does not take disciplinary action against students who skip class or make mistakes. Instead, the school fosters friendly and respectful communication with students in these situations. This approach provides a firm yet kind response that respects each student’s needs and circumstances, transforming a potentially adverse situation into one of success and personal growth. Furthermore, it helps prevent students from spending more time away from the classroom and being isolated from a supportive environment.

During their visit, James and Izzy learned about the importance of eliminating the stigma associated with homelessness. Ms. Tait emphasized that Monarch students deserve respect and equitable access to educational opportunities that will help them flourish beyond campus grounds. She also stressed the significance of in-kind donations, noting that wearing clean clothes and receiving dignified items help empower students and enhance their educational journey.

We would like to extend our gratitude to James and Izzy, who visited the Monarch School on Parker’s behalf, and the Lancers who helped assemble the birthday boxes that will be given to students at Monarch School.
