National Youth Art Recognizes Outstanding Performances by Parker Students
On Monday, July 16, members of the Parker Drama Club were recognized for their outstanding performances at the 13th Annual National Youth Arts awards ceremony. Rising Grade 9 student Helena Vargas, Class of 2022, won Outstanding Supporting Performance in the Junior Division for her role as Helena in Parker’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Drama teacher Elise Marinkovich won Outstanding Direction for A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Parker’s Drama Club puts on four to five shows a year. Judges from the National Youth Arts attended every Parker play this season and reviewed the performances of our Middle and Upper School drama students. Parker’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream received nominations for Outstanding Support Performance in a Play by Erika Bruell, Class of 2019, as Theseus/Oberon; Isabella Cerqueira, Class of 2022, as Puck; and Jack Morrill, Class of 2022, as Nick. The production also received a nomination for Outstanding Costume Design by Elise Marinkovich.
Senior Vaughn Melbourn, Class of 2019, was nominated for Outstanding Performance in a Musical for his role as Lewis in Parker’s production of Pippin.
For the Junior Division, Maggie Weller, Class of 2022; and Arya Hanumara, Class of 2022; were nominated for Outstanding Performance in A Child Shall Lead and the ensemble was nominated for Outstanding Ensemble.
The ceremony was held at the Lawrence Family Jewish Community Center in La Jolla, where youth theater arts students from across the San Diego County gathered to celebrate the best performances of the year. Every year more than 600 productions are considered for the awards.
