We hope you can join us tomorrow morning for our February Parents Association General Meeting, at 8:30 a.m. in the Lower School Szekely Auditorium. Enjoy a preview of some of the exciting live auction items up for bid and the talented chefs to be showcased at the Black & White Ball.

Following the business portion of the meeting, hear an informative parent education segment by Dr. Yalda T. Uhls, author of MEDIA MOMS AND DIGITAL DADS: A Fact-Not-Fear Approach to Parenting in the Digital Age. Dr. Uhls will discuss the most common challenges and misconceptions around kids’ media use. Drawing on her years of experience as a Hollywood film executive, child psychologist, research scientist, and media expert for the national non-profit Common Sense Media, she pulls together the most current research to put parents’ fears to rest.


Pet Day Praise

Thank you to Lower School Pet Day chair Ruth MacPete for carrying on one of Parker’s oldest and most beloved traditions. This past Friday, the Lower School was host to hundreds of Parker family pets. Thank you to all the faculty, staff, parents for creating such a fun, magical morning for our students and their pets.

11th Grade Parent Mixer & Faculty Appreciation Hosts

Save the date for the 11th grade parent mixer on Saturday, February 27 from 6-9 p.m. Click on this invitation for more information and to RSVP. Invitations will also be emailed to 11th grade parents this week.

The 11th grade is hosting the Faculty Appreciation Breakfast on Monday, February 22 to welcome the faculty and staff back to school and thank them for all they do for our students. Please sign up here  to bring items for the breakfast or to help with set up.


Parker Parent Book Discussion Series: The Great Gatsby

All lower, middle and upper school parents are invited to a Parker English class experience via the Parent Book Discussion Series Tuesday, February 23, 6-8:00 p.m. Chris Harrington, Vassiliadis Family Chair in English, will be leading a discussion on

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel The Great Gatsby in Upper School room 220.  Interested parents can sign up here or email pa-president@francisparker.org.

Parents should come prepared for class:  book read, copy in hand, and ready to share their thoughts.  Refreshments will be served. This first discussion group is limited to 15 parents so RSVP is required. If we have more parents interested than can be accommodated, we will add a second discussion evening.

The next Black & White Ball committee meeting is this Thursday at 8:15 a.m. in the Nicholas Commons on the Linda Vista Campus. Being part of the committee is a great way to meet fellow Parker parents and help with raising funds to support our school and its mission.


WeCare Parenting Speaker, March 21 & 22

Save the date for another great parent education opportunity with a lecture by Dr. Anthony Wolf, a practicing clinical psychologist for children and adolescents and author of the popular parenting books I’d Listen to My Parents if They’d Just Shut Up; What to Say and Not Say when Parenting Teens and the bestseller, Get Out of My Life, But First Could You Drive Me and Cheryl to the Mall? A Parent’s Guide to the New Teenager. This lecture is being presented by WeCare, a consortium of San Diego independent schools, including Francis Parker. Two opportunities to hear the lecture are Monday, March 21 at 6 p.m. (social) 7 p.m (lecture) at La Jolla Country Day School and Tuesday, March 22 at 9 a.m. (social) and 10 a.m. (lecture) at Warren Walker Middle School.

If you are interested in experiencing what your kids experience in their Parker English classes, consider attending the first installment of the Parent Book Discussion Series Tuesday, February 23, 6-8:00 p.m. Chris Harrington, Vassiliadis Family Chair in English, will be leading a discussion on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic American novel The Great Gatsby in Upper School room 220.  Interested parents can sign up here or email pa-president@francisparker.org.

“We thought we would start this series with a classic that all Parker students read,” said Harrington, who has been teaching Fitzgerald’s novel to juniors for the past 25 years.  “It’s a book that leads to a wide range of discussion topics, from the formation of personal identity to the allure of materialism to the substance of the American Dream.”

Parents should come prepared for class:  book read, copy in hand, and ready to share their thoughts.  Refreshments will be served. This first discussion group is limited to 15 parents so RSVP is required. If we have more parents interested than can be accommodated, we will add a second discussion evening. We invite and encourage parents from the lower, middle and upper school to participate.

Thank you to our Lower School VPs, Noelle Ludwig and Julie Turner, for hosting the First Grade Parent Mixe last Friday. This was a great opportunity for the Class of 2027 parents to meet and mingle. The remaining Lower School Grade-level Parent Mixers are:

Thank you to everyone who attended our Parents Association General meeting last Monday. This record-number crowd enjoyed the parent education segment, College Admissions: A Primer for Parents, led by Terri Devine, Parker's Dean of College Counseling and Ed Devine, Director of Admission at Lafayette College. Thank you to Parker alumni Claire Klein, Charlie Bullard, and Jacob Gardenswartz for giving us insight into their personal college admissions process and what to expect the first year of college.

College Admissions:  A Primer for Parents

News of college admission seems to surround parents on a regular basis...there are articles in newspapers and magazines, numerous books and websites, and many conversations at dinner parties and sports games.  How can a parent sift through the chatter, keep informed of necessary information, and keep a healthy perspective?  Please join Parker's Dean of College Counseling, Terri Devine; Dean of Admission at Lafayette College, Matt Hyde; and Director of Admission at Lafayette College, Ed Devine; for helpful insights into the college admissions process.  The panel has worked with thousands of families and has more than 50 years of combined experience in the college admissions process.

First Grade Parent Mixer

The first grade parent mixer will take place on Friday, January 22 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Nicholas Commons on the Linda Vista campus. All 1st Grade parents should have received an email invitation.
