Incoming 9th Grade FAQs

What’s my summer reading?
Summer reading for the school year is posted for individual classes on the Parker website in the spring. Students can purchase the books using MBS Direct (through the Parker website) or through an outside bookstore.

Which English books do I order?
All 9th graders take English 9. Books for this course, and only this course, will be distributed at school. Students will be billed for the books.

How and when do I order my other textbooks?
Students should order the books for all other classes in late July, when you get your list of scheduled courses in the mail.

When and how do I get my schedule?
The School will notify families when schedules are available.

Should I take summer school? What do I take? When do I register, etc.?
Taking an elective can be helpful, but is not necessary. Graduation requirements can be met without taking a Summer School course. Registration for Summer School started in March.

What supplies do I need for the first day of school?
On the first day of school students should bring textbooks and basic supplies (pen, pencil, and paper). Teachers will share any additional requirements on the first day of school.

Where do I get my planner?
Planners will be distributed to students during the first week of school.

How and when do I get a locker & lock?
Freshmen may claim a locker by putting a lock (purchased through School or independently) on a locker the week before school begins (Monday-Friday). Once a locker is claimed the student should register the locker with Ms. Southworth in the Upper School Office.

Where do I get my class shirts?
Class shirts will be designed and ordered during the summer by the newly elected Freshman Class Representatives. The Class Representatives will be contacting their classmates for sizing and billing, so students should be sure to respond promptly through the School’s First Class accounts.

What is the class color?

When do I register and for what do I register?
Information about registration will be discussed during the registration meeting on April 25. If you miss the meeting, please contact Carrie Dilmore, 9th Grade Class Dean.

How and when do I find out about math and language placement?
For all returning students, this information comes from the 8th grade teachers in the spring. New students take placement tests.

When do fall sports begin?
Football begins on Wednesday, August 8, 2012. All other fall sports will begin in mid-August. The actual start date will be approved by the SDCIF in late April and will be posted on the Parker website at that time.

Where do I get my PE uniforms for Health and Fitness class?
http://www.millswear.com/school.jsp?path=-1|29675&id=158424 under gymwear.

What is sports eligibility?
Everyone has a clean slate at the beginning of freshman year. After the first trimester, all co/extra-curricular activities are subject to the following eligibility policies:

  • A student receiving 2 Ds, 1 F (or 2 Ns and 1 U for Citizenship) on a trimester grade report will become ineligible for all extra-curricular activities, effective the Monday after grades are submitted and lasting until the Monday after grades are submitted for the ensuing grading period.
  • A student receiving an Incomplete in a trimester grade report will become ineligible, effective the Monday after grades are submitted and lasting until the Incomplete is resolved.
  • A student involved in athletics may continue to practice when ineligible unless their GPA for the previous grading period was below 2.0. In that case, the student will be ineligible for competition and practice.
  • A student may become temporarily ineligible due to poor Citizenship or failure to meet school requirements. This ineligibility will remain in effect until all issues have been resolved.

How can I run for ASB?
Elections for Freshman Class Representatives are held in the spring in the Middle School. In addition, freshmen may run for 10th grade ASB positions in the spring of their 9th grade year.

How do I set up my First Class account/email?
Students should use the same account used in Middle School. If a student is new to Parker, the instructions will be given during orientation.

What/who is the 9th Grade Dean?
Carrie Dilmore is the Grade Level Dean for 9th grade. She will help guide and support the students through the transition to the Upper School.

Am I allowed to go off campus?
Parker has a closed campus and freshmen may not go off campus during the day unless they are being picked up by a parent/guardian for an appointment or other personal matter. Students must sign out in the Upper School Office to leave campus. Students may go off campus after 2:30 pm.

How many Community Service hours do I need and when are they due?
Freshmen must complete 10 hours. The hours are due in early spring. Each community service project must be approved by Parker’s Director of Community Programs, Carol Jensen.
