The Lower School Code of Ethics: S.T.R.I.V.E. frames our expectations for students' conduct, attitude, and citizenship. Together, the students, staff and parents say it out loud as part of our weekly Lower School community flag-raising on Monday mornings:
Seek always to do your best.
Treat people and property with respect.
Revere the truth.
Invest in your future.
Value School rules, your heritage and personal responsibility.
Enrich the world for all.
Lower School Principal Bob Gillingham tells us where this comes from, and how it continues to grow. He writes...
STRIVE, our code of ethics, was developed 18 years ago by my wife and me as we drove to Colorado with our three children. I had been frustrated by the number of discipline problems I'd had to deal with in my first year as Principal, and, in what became an epiphany, a parent had asked me what, exactly, we expected of the students, and I found myself grasping for an answer.
In order to better articulate the school’s expecations, my wife, Listy and I brainstormed common values and an acronym to capture them, and STRIVE was born. Later, I realized that the structure helped all of us to work comfortably within commonly-understood expectations, and discipline problems decreased markedly.
