smART Explorations (VIRTUAL)
Instructor: Barbara Young
Grade Level: For rising Grade SK- Grade 5 students
Adult Support: 1-2, Minimal to frequent adult supervision and support required
Course Description
smART Explorations will take young artists on a journey of exploration, fun, and learning.
To better serve young artists virtually this class will be divided into two age groups. SK-2nd Grade will be the early morning sessions. Lessons will be kept straightforward and age appropriate, but an older helper for students is encouraged. 3rd-5th Grade students will be in the later morning sessions and include more complex exercises and projects to keep this age group engaged.
Each week, students will focus on a different media theme including Make Your Mark, Produce Paintings & Prints, Create with Clay, Undertake Upcycling and bring it all together with Mixed Media Mashup. A box of art supplies will be provided each week, as well as a list of materials to gather from home.
Throughout the journey the foundational building blocks–the Seven Elements of Art (Line, Shape, Form, Color, Texture, Value and Space) will be intertwined while practicing and refining skills. Students will finish the end of each week completing several artworks from their smART Explorations.
June 22-June 26
Make Your Mark: Come explore a variety of drawing media. Students will learn about and explore graphite, charcoal, colored pencils, markers, ink, and pastels to create original works.
June 29-July 2 (M-TH)
Produce Painting & Prints: Students will focus on learning about watercolor and tempera paints as they create. Students will also get to explore printmaking with everyday objects and styrofoam prints.
July 13-July 17
Create with Clay: It’s a week to get squishy and explore 3D art and sculpture. Students will experience the differences by using a variety of clay-like salt dough, polymer clay, model magic, and air dry clay as they sculpt their masterpieces. It’s a fun-filled week of getting your hands dirty with that satisfying tactile experience. Great for all, but especially for an energetic student that learns best kinesthetically.
July 20-July 24
Undertake Upcycling: Plastic bottles become chandeliers, paper cups turn into mobiles, socks can make purses and puppets, old CDs can be used as a loom to weave coasters, tin cans make great robots, and so much more. Students will learn about how to take everyday materials and use them to create beautiful, fun, and functional art pieces. They will learn how to reduce, reuse, and recycle and how it helps our environment. Start saving materials now.
July 27-July 31
Mixed Media Mashup: This week brings it all together. Students will take a variety of different media and mix them together for some amazing results. Work will combine drawing and painting with a touch of fabric, prints with collages of magazine images, sculpture with woven fibers and so much more. Let your imagination soar, the skies the limit.
